In 2004, Kennedy was chosen by the Archdiocese to pilot a wireless 1:1 laptop program. Today, Kennedy is a leader among St. Louis high schools utilizing technology to expand educational opportunities. The success of Kennedy's program results from a continuous cycle of teacher training, assessment, and program evaluation. Technology is extensively used by students, faculty, and parents.
The technology at Kennedy allows our students and faculty to develop 21st century skills in this global world. Kennedy's technology includes video conferencing, class web pages, virtual classrooms, online discussions, and more.
Frequently asked questions concerning the laptop program
1. Where does the laptop come from?
All Kennedy students are issued a laptop, funded through a modest tech fee, payable each year. Students and parents sign a usage agreement. While a student at Kennedy, a laptop will be provided through our program. The program is currently designed to have students use two different laptops during their high school career. Student laptops are returned at the end of sophomore year and a new laptop is issued for junior and senior year. Families also have the option to purchase the student's current laptop upon graduation from Kennedy.
2. What happens when the laptop is broken?
Kennedy laptops are supported by a technology staff that includes an A+ certified technician and a team of students. Laptops are often repaired on campus. Loaners are immediately issued when repairs require laptops to be admitted to the PC Hospital. Laptops are insured through the program for all damage except abuse, fire, or theft.
3. How are the laptops being used?
Like many schools, our students are using their laptops to take notes, access web based material related to their classes (e-text and other supplementary material), make presentations, etc.
Kennedy students are also taking online classes, meeting online during non-class hours with their teachers in virtual classrooms, participating in and delivering video conferences, providing content to grade schools in the St. Louis area, as well as partnering with schools in St. Louis, New York, Mexico, the UK, and Italy.
